A Democratic lawmaker said he plans to file articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump over his proposal to "take over Gaza."

On Wednesday (February 5), Texas Rep. Al Green announced that he was launching efforts to impeach Trump, calling the president's plans for Gaza a "desperate deed" that amounted to ethnic cleansing, per The Guardian.

Trump recently proposed removing Palestinians from Gaza and rebuilding the territory to serve as a U.S.-owned “Riviera of the Middle East."

“Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world,” Green told the House on Wednesday. “And the prime minister of Israel should be ashamed, knowing the history of his people, to stand there and allow such things to be said."

Green evoked civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he announced his plans to bring articles of impeachment against Trump.

“Dr King was right. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America," he said. "I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for desperate deeds proposed, and desperate deeds done.”

Green added that the “impeachment movement is going to be a grass-up movement, not a top-down” and “when the people demand it, it will be done”.

Trump was impeached twice during his first term but was acquitted in the Senate on both occasions.

Pete Aguilar, the No. 3 House Democrat, reportedly indicated Wednesday that impeachment was not an immediate focus of his caucus. However, Green, who previously participated in unsuccessful efforts to impeach Trump, suggested he would be moving forward with his plans with or without backing.

“I know that it’s time for us to lay the foundation again,” Green said Wednesday. “On some issues, it is better to stand alone than not stand at all. On this issue, I stand alone, but I stand for justice.”
