A Democratic lawmaker is seeking to impeach President Donald Trump after the administration declined to follow a Supreme Court ruling to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador.
On Monday (April 28), Michigan Rep. Shri Thanedar (D) announced that he was introducing articles of impeachment against Trump ahead of the president's rally in the state celebrating his 100th day in office, per Newsweek.
"I have just introduced articles of impeachment against President Trump," Thanedar wrote on X. "Donald Trump is not above the law, and when he ignores the constitution, he should be held accountable."
Thanedar said he was seeking to impeach Trump after he "defied" the Supreme Court ruling to facilitate Abrego Garcia's return. The Trump administration has accused Abrego Garcia of having ties to the MS-13 gang, though he has no criminal convictions.
In a video, Thanedar said the nation's highest court determined that Abrego Garcia was entitled to return and get due process, yet the Trump administration has chosen to "defy" the SCOTUS order.
"Donald Trump has already done real damage to our democracy. But defying a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court Ruling? That has to be the final straw," Thanedar said.
Thanedar also accused Trump of engaging in "a sweeping abuse of power, flagrant violations of the Constitution, and acts of tyranny that undermine American democracy and threaten the rule of law."
"Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation's constitution and our democracy. His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act," the congressman said.
Thanedar's call to impeach comes after Democratic Representative Al Green said in February that he would introduce articles of impeachment against Trump, alleging "dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done."
However, because the Republican Party controls both the House and Senate, it's unlikely that efforts to impeach Trump will be successful.
